Overcoming a Spirit of Rejection

RejectionEzekiel 16:1-5
The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.
 
Rejection is demonic bondage. As a Christian we should experience God’s love and forgiveness, but many of us still experience the pain of rejection, insecurities, fear, low self-esteem, or even abandonment issues that we’ve experienced in broken relationships. But God’s fullness and mercy can restore us by His love and acceptance. Let me explain.
 
Rejection is the fruit of a fallen nature that we received when Adam fell from God’s presence. When Adam heard God walking in the garden he hid himself because he was afraid. God said, “Adam, where are you?” Adam answered and said, “I was afraid because I was naked.” God said, “who told you, you were naked? Did you eat from the tree?” Adam said, “yes.” Every human being that is separated from God through sin has a spirit of rejection and fear on them since birth. This brokenness can only be overcome through a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Repenting of sins that have kept us separate from the living God.
 
Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
 
When Jesus was baptized He came out of the water, the Heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove settling on Him. A voice from Heaven said this is my dearly beloved Son who brings me great joy.
 
Ephesians 1:5-7
he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
 
The problem with rejection is that we are associating that with a past experience, our fallen nature, and our broken relationship with God. If we are truly going to overcome the spirit of rejection we must identify with Christ as a child of God.
 
Ephesians 3:19
And to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
 
Rejection has a way of destroying a person’s life in a way that few other things can. The sad fact is that the number of people who are affected by rejection is staggering. If we want to be all that God has created us to be, then overcoming rejection and it’s effects is vital and absolutely essential.
 
Many people who have faced rejection and abuse as a child, grow up with unresolved emotional wounds and fears, which if not cleansed and released will grow and fester into unforgiveness, envy, jealousy, anger, blaming our parents or blaming God. The goal of the enemy is to build walls around us emotionally and set us inside the box of negative feelings, thoughts, and hurts. We must be willing to break out of that box and reject those negative attitudes. If not we will develop anger, lack of trust, insecurities, shyness, or fear of people’s responses. We become people pleasers instead of God-pleasers. Which also creates rebellion, stubbornness, self-pity, even at times seeking others approval at our own hurts.
 
Rejection creates within us a desire to be loved and to be wanted and we look for someone to fill that love when only God can. We are constantly looking for someone to make us whole. Along with feelings of rejection is a sense of brokenness, worthlessness, hopelessness, depression, and always seeking approval from others. We base our identity upon what we think of ourselves which leads us to being critical, envious, or jealous of others success. Fears of confrontation because you think your not likable or even admitting when your wrong. Thinking you have all the answers and being eager to tell everyone else how they need to be  doing everything right when you don’t even know how to fix yourself. They lead people to themselves rather than to Jesus. The truth is we were created by God to be loved, accepted, and appreciated. Rejection is an Antichrist spirit that is from the mind of the devil. We always must see ourselves as a child of God as the source of our identity.
 
Another form of rejection is self rejection. It is when a person dislikes who they are, what they do, or what they say. There’s an inner resentment that is usually tied to unforgiveness. They constantly repent and feel sorry for the mistakes they’ve made. The expect much more than what they can achieve. They think by becoming successful they can overcome the inferiority that dogs their life. It’s my fault syndrome. It’s my fault my mother left my father. It’s my fault they got a divorce. God is always angry at me. I never feel loved. This is very common in a spirit of rejection. Let’s take a look at an example of this.
 
1 Samuel 18:6-11
When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. As they danced, they sang:

“Saul has slain his thousands,
    and David his tens of thousands.”

Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David. 10 The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand 11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.

From that very day an evil spirit came upon Saul and caused him to become exceedingly angry, even attempting to murder David. That’s what rejection does, it opens up for evil spirits to work through our attitudes or behavior.

 
Rejection is really a misplaced identity. What defines you? It is your job, your marital status, your looks, how much money you have? What do you think of yourself?
 
When we base our attitude on God’s Word we become immune to rejection. As long as we put our identity in Christ we can overcome the spirit.
 
Psalm 27:10
Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.
 
Romans 8:17
 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
 
Ephesians 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
 
Ephesians 2:6
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.
 
Romans 3:22
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.There is no difference between Jew and Gentile.

 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
